Cork Castles

Cork Castles

Cork is rich in history and many of its beautiful castles and forts are still standing. The most famous is of course Blarney castle, which is a mere twenty minutes from Cork city centre. Built almost six hundred years ago, it is home to the Blarney Stone, which was incorporated into the battlements.

Blackrock Castle is an impressive structure, built over four hundred years ago as a defensive fortification at the narrow channel of the River Lee in Cork. It has since become a working Observatory, and offers both historical tours and tours of the observatory.

Charles Fort in Kinsale is a 17th century star shaped fort. Once one of the largest military installations in the country, it is associated with both the Williamite War and the Irish Civil War. It was declared a National Monument in 1973. Throughout the summer Charles Fort now hosts various events, from re-enactments to concerts.

Desmond Castle, also in Kinsale, was originally built as a customs house around 1500 and also served as an ordinance store in the Battle of Kinsale in 1601. It became the town jail in the late 1700s and it now houses the International Museum of Wine. It is open to the public from April to September.

Barryscourt Castle is a 16th century Irish Tower near Carrigtwohill. It has been extensively restored and refurnished and is open to the public from May to September.

Carrigadrochid Castle near Macroom is a 15th century tower with a bridge over the river accessing it from the second story. It is now a ruin, with a beautiful aspect over the river. It is a rarity having been built in the river itself.
