Cork has a long standing relationship with horse racing. The term “steeplechase” originated just a short distance from Cork Racecourse in 1752, when Edmund Blake and Cornelius O'Callaghan raced from St John's Church in Buttevant to St Mary's Church in Doneraile to prove which of their horses was best.
Cork Racecourse was opened in Mallow in 1924, and several race meetings take place annually. The largest festival is the Racing Home for Easter Festival which runs over Easter weekend, with a number of activities taking place in the area. The racecourse is a right-handed track which is flat and oval. The racecourse is wheelchair accessible with a designated disabled viewing area.
Located only forty kilometres from Cork city, with bars, restaurants and many hospitality suites, Cork Racecourse is designed with the comfort of the punter in mind. With regular race meetings taking place throughout the year, it provides a great day's entertainment.
