One of the highlights of the Cork City calendar, is the Ocean to City race, which is set to take place on Saturday 30th May 2015.
Cork Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world which allows for a wonderful spectacle of sailing during this unique event. Spanning 15 nautical miles, the Cork Ocean to City race begins in Crosshaven, heading out to open water at Roches Point, the mouth of Cork Harbour, before sailing the long straight stretch into the city. The sailors enjoy a scenic journey, passing historical landmarks such as Cobh, the final port of call for the ill-fated Titanic, Spike Island and the Irish Naval base at Haulbowline.
As sailors enter Lough Mahon at Blackrock Castle at the cusp of Cork city, the race truly begins, with sailors jockeying to place in the winning ranks, spurred on by the crowds that gather to watch the race all along the riverbank.
The exciting race concludes at Lapps Quay in Cork City
, and here a festival atmosphere prevails with face painting, market stalls and musical entertainment. Guaranteed to please all the family, the Cork Ocean to City race this June Bank holiday is a must for all.
